Blackhawk Church
LOCATION: Fitchburg, Wisconsin | CAPACITY: 105 kW | COMPLETION DATE: August 2019
SOLAR CONTRACTOR:
Blackhawk Church in Fitchburg is the most recent addition to an institution that has called the Madison area home for over 50 years. With locations also in Middleton and downtown Madison, the congregation serves thousands and outreaches to community organizations and schools throughout the area.
Their commitment to sustainability is clearly shown by this photovoltaic installation, which consists of 318 fixed roof mounted panels and should meet 25-33% of the church’s total electricity needs over the course of a typical year.
The planning process for this project began as the building was being constructed. We recommended a 100% photovoltaic system for the available roof space on the new church, up to 100 kW systems based on the church’s utility’s current net-metering tariff.
Legacy Solar Co-op Legacy Solar Co-op (LSC) has worked extensively with non-profit organizations, including many faith-based institutions, to provide significant cost relief for building solar projects. The church was a recipient of the Renewable Energy Competitive Incentive Program (RECIP) grant through WI Focus on Energy, in addition to receiving a Renew Wisconsin Solar for Good grant. Adding a tax sponsor and a year-6 buyout option results in at least 50% in capital cost savings. The energy generated from the solar array helps to buy down the cost for the first 6 years while the IRS recapture period is being satisfied.
